Press Release - Bryson Touts Sales Tax Cut, Illegal Immigration Plan in 3rd Debate

Bredesen weak on ethics

Jim Bryson (R-Franklin) pushed a sales tax reduction on food and a plan to deal with illegal immigration at the state level during the third gubernatorial debate Saturday night. He also hammered Gov. Bredesen for his administration's shredding of documents related to sexual harassment investigations and the TBI's refusal to release a file regarding a speeding ticket "fixed" for the Deputy Governor. A contempt of court citation has been filed against the TBI in the Eastern District Federal Court for withholding that information.

"We saw the differences in the status quo and my vision for Tennessee tonight," said Sen. Bryson. "I will cut the sales tax, he won't; I will punish and deport illegal immigrants who commit crime, he won't; I will hold every member of my administration to a higher ethical standard; he has not."

Governor Bredesen reiterated his opposition to a sales tax decrease and, for the third time, refused to rule out an increase in the gas tax in the final gubernatorial debate. The debate was televised throughout most of the state.
